Canalul experimental TVR HD este emis pe satelit (DVB-S) în pachetul digital al TVR de pe satelitul Eutelsat şi terestru (DVB-T) şi în zona Bucureştiului în zona de acoperire a emitatorului SNR - canalul 54.
Pentru recepţie, telespectatorii au nevoie de un tv-set (LCD sau plasma) cu raport de aspect 16:9 şi un set-top box compatibil MPEG 4/H.264. Set-top boxul este folosit fie pentru recepţia semnalului emis prin satelit fie pentru recepţia semnalului emis de emitatorul terestru DVB-T pe canalul 54.
Pentru receptia semnalului din satelit set-top box-ul trebuie sa poata decripta (sa fie compatibil) sistemul de codare al TVR - VIACCESS 2.6. Cartela de decodare se poate achiziti-ona de la magazinele specializate sau de la sediul TVR.
Semnalul emis terestru este necriptat. Este recomandat un receptor tv FullHD în locul unuia HDReady. Pentru recepţia semnalului din satelit este necesară o antenă de minimum 80 cm, în timp ce pentru recepţia semnalului terestru digital este necesară în aria Bucureştiului doar o antenă de cameră activă. Se poate recepţiona şi în zone mai îndepărtate folosind o antena Yagi acordată pe canalul 54.
Semnalul emis pe satelit conţine canalele TVR1, TVR2, TVR Cultural, TVR Internaţional, TVR Craiova, TVR Cluj, TVR Iaşi, TVR Timişoara şi canalul experimental TVR HD. Semnalul emis terestru digital contine canalele TVR1, TVR2 şi canalul experimental TVR HD.
Dacă se optează pentru recepţia din satelit este recomandabil instalarea unei antene de 1.1m cu montură motorizată HH pentru ca se vor putea recepţiona în afara de canalele TVR şi o multitudine de canale FTA (Free To Air, necriptate), atât româneşti cât şi internaţionale.
